Derg Farmhouse Cheese, owned by Paddy and Kay Cooney is located in the townland of Garranmore facing lough derg on the scenic triangle between Garrykennedy and Youghal Quay, a few miles outside Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.
The Cooney family have been farming in the area for generations. The idea of making their own cheese had been at the back of Paddy’s mind from the time he was at Gurteen Agricultural College where it was presented as an alternative farm enterprise.
They are in production since 2014. They make raw milk cheddar cheese from their own herd of friesian / jersey cows. It is only made in Summer months from milk that has been produced off grass.
” The exceptional quality and local nature of the milk provided the raw material for an excellent cheese with ‘terroir’ and this, together with a high standard of production, ensured that it quickly attracted an appreciative following of people who loved the rich tangy flavour and firm texture of the mature cheese. Signifcantly, it also impressed the judges at the 2015 Irish Cheese Awards, where it took the title of Best New Cheese.
